

BIOGRAPHY
Frank Birkbeck is a seasoned musician with over 20 years of experience, celebrated for his versatility across various instruments and his eclectic musical taste. His journey has seen him through numerous bands and projects, culminating in the formation of the 'Frank Birkbeck Group', a trio that has become one of the most sought-after jazz ensembles in the Midlands and beyond.
Frank's performances have graced the stages of renowned venues like Ronnie Scott's, Matt and Phreds, Theatre Royal, Troy Bar, the Wardrobe, and Peggie's Skylight, earning him a reputation that extends across Europe. His current engagements include three ongoing residencies, and his live shows have recently been selling out theatres, showcasing his growing appeal and influence.
In addition to his ensemble work, Frank is on the cusp of a significant milestone with the upcoming release of his debut solo album. His collaborations reflect his standing in the music community, having worked with luminaries such as Hugh Pascal, Alan Barnes, Snake Davis, Luca Boscagin, Sam Jackson, Martyn Spencer, and Eliot Richards. His dedication to his craft and his expansive musical palette continue to define his career in the vibrant world of jazz.

Sam Jackson (Double Bass)is a Leeds-based bass player. He is involved in many projects and bands, incorporating many different styles. When you see him you'll probably be like, oh yeah it's that guy. I saw him play before that one time with that other band. By day he can also be found working with undergraduates at Leeds Conservatoire. Sam is also an author, having recently published a book entitled The Fundamentals of Jazz Composition.
Steve Hanley (Drums) is a 1st class honors graduate from Leeds Conservatoire and is part of a fresh generation of musicians from the northern quarter of the UK. Hanley has performed and collaborated with many prestigious artists including Mike Walker (Impossible Gentleman) Neil Yates (Edition Records), Ant Law (Tim Garland), Stuart McCallum (Cinematic Orchestra) and Jim Corry (Jamiroquai) to name a few. Hanley has been a Jazz North ambassador since 2014 and has appeared in many ensembles across the northern line rosters to date, with one such band (Family Band) going on to represent the UK at the 2019 12 Points Festival hosted at the Bimhuis, Amsterdam.
Recently, Hanley was nominated for a Parliamentary Jazz Award for ‘Ensemble of the year’ with ‘Ubunye’ which they went onto win in July 2023. As well as extensive touring across the UK and Europe, Hanley enjoys lecturing at the University of Hull and Sheffield, Leeds Becket and Leeds Conservatoire. Hanley’s approach generates a unique voice, through intrinsic grooves and free flowing melodic improvisation.
Si Potts (drums) worked as a session drummer with the BBC at their Maida Vale and Paris Studios. He spent over a decade in London playing at venues such Ronnie Scott's, the 606, Jazz Café, and the 100 Club. He has worked with many artists including Jamie Cullum, Digby Fairweather, Stacey Kent, Jacqui Dankworth, Barb Jungr and Denny Illett Jr.
Tom Maddison (Double Bass) Since graduating from Leeds College of Music's renowned jazz course in 2013, Tom Maddison has gone on to perform with a plethora of artists across the UK and internationally. From jazz and electro-swing bands at UK festivals such as Boomtown and festival, to big bands and orchestras at venues as prestigious as the Royal Albert Hall, Thomas brings a wealth of hard earned experience to the stage. He also has a passion for writing and arranging music, and examples of his work can be heard by many RAF ensembles, including the famous 'Squadronaires.
